Dr Susannah Pickering-Saqqa is Senior Lecturer in International Development with NGO Management at UEL. She has an MPhil in Turkish-Islamic Studies and co-convened the Development Studies Association NGO Study Group, 2012 – 2018. Her recent research includes: understandings of urban deprivation in Mumbai and London; NGO interventions around female foeticide in Haryana, India; menstrual health in Bihar and UP, India, and domestic programming of Oxfam GB and Islamic Relief.
INGOs pushing at the boundaries of development: the case of Islamic Relief
The issue of ‘domestic programming’ of International NGOs (INGOs) such as Islamic Relief Worldwide (IRW) has taken on a higher profile in recent years. This is due to a number of interconnected factors impacting the development sector. This paper explores some of the drivers which have led Islamic Relief partners in seven countries of the Global North and South to work ‘domestically’ and with what implications.
