Mishaal Javed, who goes by the stage name Silai Estatira, is a young British hip-hop artist, spoken-word poet, and full-time student. Inspired by her grandparents who were both poets, as well as the hip-hop music she grew up on, Mishaal began writing and performing her own raps at the age of 11, the same age she began wearing a hijab. Now aged 20, she routinely performs her music in local festivals and gigs, manages an online presence and is working on an upcoming debut album.
Hijab and Hip-Hop: The Transformative Power of Self Expression
Muslims often feel pressured to not express their artistic creativity. The expectation to ‘self censor’ is drawn from mainstream media and traditional Muslim communities, despite the two often being posed as polar opposites with the other. Mishaal Javed explores her journey as an aspiring hijabi artist in the hip-hop scene, in an attempt to uncover the truly transformative power of self-expression both for the individual and the wider society.
