Dr Irum Shehreen Ali is a sociologist, writer and policy analyst with a background as a development practitioner and researcher in democratisation and institutional governance. She is a Fellow at the Muslim Institute and is currently undertaking projects on the impact of Brexit on BAME populations and access to mental health services for Muslim youth. She holds a DPhil in Sociology from the University of Oxford.
Brexit and BAME Britain: investigating the Impact
Brexit: what will it mean for those who have the most to lose? Regardless of the type of Brexit, leaving the EU will have a harsher effect on minorities, via job losses and increasing poverty, than those in better socioeconomic positions. BAME families, especially a large number of Muslims ones, are already generally worse off than their white counterparts across a range of socio-economic indicators. Given how profoundly Brexit will impact us, why are minorities not heard in the conversation on Brexit?
